Return to Science Grant

Applications for the Return to Science Grant can be submitted throughout the entire year, while the evaluation of all applications will take place once a year in early February. Articles for consideration can be submitted in the application form

In 2009, the SETAC Europe Environmental Education Award was granted to Professor Lorraine Maltby (University of Sheffield, UK). The award included a cash prize, which Lorraine kindly donated in order to establish a “Return to Science Grant”. This donation was followed by additional generous donations.

The SETAC Europe Return to Science Grant is awarded to stimulate scientists who have experienced a temporary professional break due to childcare e.g. maternity, paternity, adoption etc. Recognising how difficult it can be to re-establish a scientific career after a period of absence, this grant is seen as a boost and an encouragement.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be based in SETAC Europe (Central Asia, Europe or the Middle East).
  • Applications must be submitted by the candidate.
  • The candidate must also have been a member of SETAC prior to the professional break taking place.
  • The application must be made within six months of the professional break taking place and the grant must be redeemed within 2 years of being awarded.

Application Instruction

Candidates can apply by writing a short article (maximum 500 words) in keeping with the SETAC Globe that outlines their scientific career to date and how they expect the grant to benefit their future professional development. Articles can be submitted to the application module. The winning article will receive the grant and will be published in a future edition of the Globe.

Selection Process

The SETAC Europe Awards Committee will evaluate all applications.

Award Procedure

The grant will cover a SETAC Membership for one year, one registration waiver of a SETAC Europe-organised annual meeting, workshop or symposium and 1500 Euros to cover accommodation, flights and contribute to ‘childcare’.
